Derek Lee, is a multi-disciplined artist who seeks to push his knowledge of dance and art through collaboration, exploration, and discipline. Born and raised in Queens, New York, he started his humble beginning taking recreational hip hop and breakdance classes at a YMCA. He fell in love with the physicality of the style and it made him curious of what dance can offer. He then joined a local dance studio, training in ballet, acrobatics, tap dance, jazz, and many more. Besides dance, Derek has been in a few off broadway shows including “Oliver!” and “King and I” presented by National Asian Artists Project (NAAP). As a graduate of LaGuardia Arts High School class of 2022, he has had the pleasure to be in new works by Scott Autry, Tadej Brdnik, Ethan Colangelo, Norbert De La Cruz III. He is also an alumni of MOVE|NYC|’s Young Professionals Program under the direction of Nigel Campbell and Chanel DaSilva. During his two years as a Young Professional, the program has broadened Derek’s knowledge of dance and has influenced his artistry the most. Through the program, he had the opportunity to be in new creations with Ethan Colangelo, Jesse Obremski, Maleek Washington and Twyla Tharp. He is currently a third year at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee under the direction of Tommy Neblett, studying to receive his BFA in contemporary dance. Being able to learn new ideas and build on his versatility, he enjoys working with his fellow peers for student choreography and school main stage performances. He has worked with Aszure Barton, Christina Chan, Ken Ossola, Ruka White, Nicole Von Arx, and Lydia Zimmer. In his free time, he enjoys walking and running in nature, exploring different restaurants and cuisines, and rock climbing.
